At the end of the day, it's hard to argue against the overall idea of e commerce...after all, it just means you're selling things online, right?

Well, you just have to figure out exactly what kind of e commerce store you'll looking to start.

After all, selling on Amazon is way different than selling on your own site. Off the top of my head, I can figure out a couple basic differences:

• Amazon has a way bigger reach than your own private website
• However, Amazon also takes a way bigger cut than if you just do it alone

Obviously, there are more things to think about, but I think you're getting the picture...both sides have a lot in common, but there are also key differences.

So, do I recommend "My Wife Quit Her Job"?

Probably not.

But that doesn't necessarily mean it's a terrible idea, either. From what I can tell, Steve Chou is very transparent with how his own business operates, and I like that a lot.

My bigger concern is that ecommerce usually has small profit margins, which often means you have to load up on a million spatulas or something cheap like that, and hope that tons of people wanna buy them.

Anyone who has a good deal with someone in China (Chou may have this) will always have an advantage over you, and will be able to undercut your pricing without losing money like you would.

It's 100% possible to make money with courses like Steve Chou's mini course, but there's also just a ton of risk that I like to avoid when possible.

Speaking of which, I stumbled onto a niche within the lead generation industry, and I thought it sounded pretty cool. You see, instead of competing with thousands of other stores, you just go after local small businesses that need new clients.

You bring the clients to them, and they pay you...forever.

Not bad, right? The students seem pretty fired up about it.

2. You have connections with Chinese wholesalers
3. You have unlimited time and resources

2. You're a little weirded out by the name of the website
3. You'd prefer to narrow down your competition the best you can

Steve Chou does a good job of offering many different kinds of eCommerce lessons, but a lot of it boils down to a similar theme:

Lots of people wanna do this thing, and there are only so many buyers out there.

It's hard to say exactly which form of eCommerce works best, because there are unique issues for them all.

If you want a slice of Jeff Bezos' Amazon pie, for example, they will take a huge cut of your profits, even if you do all the work. Oh, and on top of that, you have to wake up every morning wondering if the store you created will still be there.

This is because Amazon doesn't actually need a lot of sellers anymore. They are being flooded with thousands of little stores that are all trying to sell cheap mugs or linens, so they love kicking off users for the smallest of reasons.

Usually these reasons are in the fineprint, and there is no way for you to get back your successful ecommerce business you poured so much into.

I can't stand Amazon FBA, if you can't tell...even if I think Steve Chou is pretty good at teaching it.

The other problem is it's kind of a race to the bottom. You'll have to compete with tons of other stores to sell the same cheap products, and anyone who has connections to China will be able to sell for cheaper than you without taking as big of a hit.

It's just not great.

Now, if you choose to sell on your own brand site, I do like the freedom of that more...but it comes with its own issues.

You'll have to learn about SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and maybe even shell out a chunk of change for advertising on Facebook, YouTube, TikTok etc.

If I had to pick one of the two, I'd definitely choose my own website because I'd have more control and wouldn't owe Amazon a dime.

That said...if you're gonna go to all that trouble to learn SEO and paid ads, then you might as well just do lead generation and stack more cash with less competition, right?

You just go out and help bring more customers to local businesses...that's basically it. Then they get a taste of what you can offer, and they pay you every month to keep the leads rolling in, and you can probably just hang out on the beach if you want.

Way different than eCommerce, where you have to be working 24/7, even on weekends.

Who Is Steve Chou?

Steve Chou is a man of Asian descent who calls Santa Clara, California, his home.

He's one of those old-school blogger-entrepreneur types, which is to say he started My Wife Quit Her Job in 2009, before social media really became what it is today.

This makes him somewhat of an early-adopter of internet selling. His ecommerce educational blog expanded into a full-out website, and now he's got a podcast, and sells on his own page as well as on Amazon.

He's a Stanford alumni, but funny enough he actually graduated in electrical engineering back in 1999. I wonder if he ever figured he'd be known for his marketing expertise instead of his ability to tell the red wire from the green wire!

It actually took him until 2016 to formally leave his electrical engineering career, so it must have been paying him pretty well. 2016 is also around the time eCommerce really started getting some momentum with Amazon FBA and dropshipping, so this isn't entirely surprising in hindsight.

While it is suspected that he makes most of his money from teaching courses these days, he still maintains his Bumblebee Linens company that he started all the way back in 2007.

This site sells linens and he likes to feature his wife on there instead of himself, which is probably because people trust women a lot more than men when it comes to delicate little things like that.

One last thing Steve likes to do is exploit affiliate marketing and its niches, so if you get recommended any of these products, just keep in mind that he gets a cut for each sale:

All in all, I think Steve is a good, decent man who just wants to spend time with his family.

That said, he's also one heckuva salesman and marketer, so I try to watch every word he says just to be safe.

How Much Do Steve Chou's Courses Cost?

One thing I respect a lot about Steve Chou is that a lot of what he does is transparent.

These days, often you'll be told one thing and then hit with hidden charges later.

Now, I will say that it is very likely for you to be hit with upsells - anything like 1-on-1 time with Chou will almost certainly cost over $10,000, for example...

...but his standard course on how to create a profitable online store is plainly listed at $2,199 for lifetime access.

If you're gonna go with this guy, then this is the best price you'll get. If you wanna pay over four months, you're looking at something like $2,400 to score your lifetime supply of Steve Chou.

And the least cost effective option is the monthly payment. If you think you'll only need him for a little while, then maybe it makes sense at roughly $300/month...but after about 7 months, you'll have basically paid for a lifetime subscription anyway. And if you want a full year, you'd be paying $3,600!

Keep in mind this is all just for learning a few things with Mr. Chou, and any extra fees associated with setting up your website and/or an Amazon account will cost you way more money.

This is one of the annoying things with Amazon or eCommerce in general: just when you think you've paid up, there's always something else. Advertising, monthly store fees, buying up tons of inventory...man, by the end of this thing you could be in some serious debt.

If you join up, be sure you'll make a profit!

Either that, or join something with lower startup costs.

My Wife Quit Her Job Refund Policy

As much as I think Steve Chou is a pretty good dude for the most part, I gotta say - he's got one of those weird refund policies.

Some people make impulsive decisions, and might wanna get a refund the next day...well, Chou doesn't allow for that. With him, you've gotta prove that you've done enough to earn it.

And then there's the bit where they mentioned they will basically decide every refund on a case-by-case basis, with no steady guidelines.

I kinda get what they're saying, they don't just want anyone to come in and score a free education. That said, the wording also allows them to completely ignore their 30-day money back "guarantee" if they don't feel like giving one.

It doesn't feel super secure, so I just advise you to be very cautious before deciding to send Steve Chou all your money.

Some of these gurus and their programs are all talk and no walk, and it can be tricky to figure out which ones are actually worth your money or not.

So, is My Wife Quit Her Job legit?

Maybe.

I'll tell you one thing: Steve Chou doesn't seem like a scam artist or anything. I think he's a decent, smart guy who has been in the eCommerce game for a while now, and that means he can probably teach you a thing or two about a thing or two.

I really like his transparency - if anything, his website might have too much info to get through, which is a nice problem to have.

But while I mentioned that Chou will tell you a lot of things, it's unlikely he'll discuss too much about the pitfalls and dangers when it comes to selling on Amazon, or online in general...and that's pretty much my biggest issue with the program.

If you're gonna go all out and make all that big investment just to end up either a slave to Amazon, or learning SEO and paid advertising, then you might as well just take the logical step into Digital Leasing.

Instead of having to store a ton of inventory in a warehouse - or God forbid, your garage - you just keep it all online, hassle-free.

Steve Chou is decent if you're desperate to get into eCommerce, but I'll always steer students toward a stronger industry, especially if there are great mentors teaching it.

You can pick the best industry in the world, and it'll still be a bad course if the mentor isn't right for you.

So, how do you choose the right program?

• Make sure you like the guru's energy
• See if this industry has what it takes to keep you in business long-term
• Ask yourself how much you're willing to invest up-front

I like Steve, and I think his program isn't bad at all.

In fact, how about a quick 3 things I like about it:

1. Very transparent website, lots of info
2. The pricing isn't too expensive for the program
3. Steve has been doing this for a long time

...and, to be fair, 3 things I don't really like:

1. eCommerce is super oversaturated, hard to break in at this point
2. If you choose to sell on Amazon, you have to hand over a huge chunk of profits
3. Storing a ton of inventory while you wait for sales to roll in can be expensive

What's Inside Steve Chou's Program?

Steve Chou seems to have a pretty strong course when it comes to creating a profitable online store.

In fact, while his program is called "My Wife Quit Her Job", the name of his actual course is "Create A Profitable Online Store".

Chou is a funny guy - I really think his branding is generic and frankly, kind of weird...but he's also good at moving sales, so it works for him!

Anyway, the course seems to run pretty deep, and he says he's constantly trying to stay on top of old, outdated material, and even listens to student recommendations if they want a new area of ecom to be discussed.

If true, that's great. Many online gurus will just build one series of videos and leave them up for years...and if you know anything about technology and how the internet has evolved over the years, you know that staying stagnant will be the death of your business.

...and it's why I have to keep going back to the same point about Steve Chou not being the problem - it's selling online that comes with some major issues for rookies in the business.

"Real recognize real" as the kids say (do they still say that?), and while I think Steve Chou is a good guru for selling on Amazon, I think Joshua T. Osborne is an even stronger mentor within the digital marketing world.

Probably not.

I've said it throughout this review: if you're really dead-set on going down the eCommerce road, then Chou's far from the worst choice...

After all, this isn't a small deal. This is an investment of both your time and money that could decide the rest of your life.

No pressure!

But just remember that it's not 2017 anymore, where there was a ton of wide-open opportunity in both Amazon selling and eCommerce in general. These days, you need something a little different...you need to "get in on the ground floor", as the saying goes.

Make things easier on yourself and choose the right industry and the best mentor that'll push you past your limits and into a new, financially free future.
