Purchase a good safety rope and adequate hardware, including harness, carabineers, and lanyards. Taking a fall arrest course in rope techniques, safety methods, and equipment is highly recommended.


Besides that, other equipment would be relatively inexpensive. They are: 5 gallon bucket, gutter spoon/ scoop, heavy rubber gloves, 16 ft extension pole, paper yard waste bags, and heavy plastic bags.

Fall will be your busiest time. While some people wait until heavy rains overflow their gutters to fix them (in the spring/ summer, for instance), there may be other times of the year when you need to do them.

Depending on your location, gutter cleaning may last for a month or longer. In warmer climates, some companies do this full-time. You should be okay as long as there is no frozen debris.

However, gutter cleaning season often begins as the last leaves fall and continues until snow is on the ground and the temperatures are significantly below freezing for a sustained period of time.

It is vital that you work every day between sunrise and sunset when you have a short season. You should start your first call early and continue working until dusk.

I’m a roofer-person so walking on the roof is quite comfortable for me. Whenever possible, I attempt to clean gutters from the roof, reaching down into them from the top. The main goal is to speed up the process.

I make sure the ladder goes up every six feet or so when the roof is steep, extending 3-4 feet to my right and left sides. Ultimately, the best thing to do is what is safe and comfortable for you.

You should scoop up nails, shingle granules, or any other type of debris in a bucket or on a tarp. If you dump debris into the grass, make sure you clean it out afterwards. In some cases, gutter cleaners will flush out the gutters with a hose.

Provide a seal on the inside rather than the outside of the gutter, if possible. If you need to seal on the exterior, choose a transparent sealer or one that matches the color of the gutter.

Fixing loose elbows and downspouts may be as easy as re-securing the loose components using self-tapping screws. The majority of hardware or roofing shops will supply gutter screws.

Copper screws should be available at a roofing supply business if the gutters are copper. Depending on the conditions, you may not want to undertake rehanging a collapsing gutter.

I would not try rehanging a gutter unless you are confident in your ability to accomplish it. A “K” shape gutter set against a flat fascia is the simplest type of gutter to rehang.
