Introduction

Harvey Weinstein is well known for being the co-founder of the Miramax entertainment company, a former film producer and movie mogul, and now a convicted sex offender sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Miramax Films was launched using the money they made from his concert promotion business which he built together with his brother, Bob.

Since its founding, Miramax has produced several award-winning films including ‘Good Will Hunting’ (1997), ‘Frida’ (2002), and ‘The Aviator’ (2004), to name a few.

In 1986, while in Miramax, Harvey Weinstein married his first wife, Eve Clinton.

Weinstein’s career was put on hold when women in the film industry started to accuse him of sexual misconduct back in 2017.

And despite his outstanding contributions and accomplishment, he got fired by his own company when this sexual scandal broke.

Early Life

Born on March 19, 1952, Weinstein grew up in New York with his younger brother, Bob Weinstein, with whom he eventually founded Miramax back in 1979. He became a very powerful and influential producer.

Harvey Weinstein graduated from the New York State University at Buffalo in 1973.

Career

Harvey with his brother, Bob, own 42% of Miramax and since 2005, they were co-chairmen of their film production company.

The Weinstein brothers produced several award winning films from which he won an Academy Award for Shakespeare in Love and 7 Tony Awards for musicals and plays like Billy Elliot the Musical, August: Osage County, and The Producers.

Weinstein was recognized by the British film industry and named him Commander of the Order of the British Empire due to his outstanding contributions.

While Harvey Weinstein’s career was in the center of much praise, it was also very much criticized.

One of the highly criticized activities of Weinstein was when he campaigned for his films during the Oscar season. This led the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to ban such campaigns.

It is a well known fact in the film industry how ruthless and violent Weinstein could get. He allegedly threw a New York Observer reporter out of a party in a headlock .

On another time, director Julie Taymor and her husband had a disagreement with Weinstein over her Frida movie’s test screening, and as a result, Weinstein publicly criticized and humiliated both of them.

It was also rumored how he hassled director Sydney Pollack about the release of his movie, The Reader while Pollack was in his deathbed.

In 2009, Weinstein publicly disagreed with efforts to extradite Roman Polanski from Switzerland to the United States over allegations of illicit sex act with a 13-year-old in 1977.

In 2013, Harvey Weinstein was incriminated by New York Post film critic Kyle Smith on producing several anti-Catholic films, such as The Priest (1994), The Butcher (1997), Magdalene’s Sisters (2002) and Philomena (2013).

Harvey Weinstein’s Causes & Political Donations

Harvey Weinstein has long been a strong supporter of democratic politics and progressive affairs.

Last April, he told the Hollywood Reporter that they planned to work with Jay Z to make a film about Trayvon Martin and create a private foundation named after Weinstein’s mother, which supports everything “from LGBT to women’s rights, more women directors, the National Endowment of the Arts.”

According to Business Insider, since the 2000 election, Weinstein was responsible for $23 million in direct and total donations to the Democratic Party committees and political candidates.

Many government officials who were recipients of Weinstein’s donations, including U.S. Presidents Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Chuck Schumer, and Patrick Leahy, recently announced that they would be giving these donations to organizations and groups that support women.

Weinstein was a staunch and supporter of the Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama campaigns, both of which issued a statement that condemned him and praised the courage and bravery of the victims who have made their names public.

Weinstein promised to donate $5 million to USC’s School of Cinematic Arts for the scholarships of women directors, but the school turned down the offer.

New Jersey’s Rutgers University, on the other hand, has no plans of returning the $ 100,000 donation made by the Weinstein Foundation to advance equality for women.

How Harvey Weinstein Wielded His Influence

People in Hollywood and the media have been afraid of Weinstein for decades: “Weinstein is a man, people are surprisingly reluctant to discuss, even skeptical,” the Guardian wrote in 2012.

But after the allegations of sexual abuse were made public, many journalists were urged to share their own Weinstein stories – which in turn helped to expose how Weinstein used his power, wealth and intimidation to cover up his crimes against his women victims.

New York writer Rebecca Traister shared a story back in 2000 when Weinstein called her a “c ***” and knocked down fellow journalist and her then-boyfriend Andrew Goldman, before dragging him down a sidewalk on Main Street.

“Harvey could spin – and/or suppress – anything; there were so many journalists on his payroll, working as film project consultants, or as screenwriters, or for his magazine,” Traister wrote.

Tina Brown, New Yorker editor and Talk magazine founder, wrote, “It was startling — and professionally mortifying — to find out how many hacks writing gossip columns or entertainment coverage were on the Miramax payroll with a ‘consultancy’ or a ‘development deal’ (one even at The New York Times).”

Marianne Garvey, former New York Daily News gossip columnist, recalled an instance when Harvey Weinstein was forcibly trying to gain her favor by using big celebrity names such as Oprah Winfrey and Jennifer Lopez to impress and manipulate her.

Harvey Weinstein would always take legal action against those who weren’t in favor of him as a way to intimidate and display his power. His reps said that Weinstein had plans to sue the New York Times. Ronan Farrow, the journalist who wrote the New Yorker expose, revealed that Weinstein personally threatened to sue him.

Sexual Assault/ Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Because several women had been coming forward to accuse him of sexual assault including one by Ashley Judd which took place some 20 years ago, Weinstein was forced to address these allegations.

And in October 2017, The Weinstein Company’s board of directors fired him.

And in a short period of time after this, Harvey was practically banned to work with any production guilds in the entertainment industry, rendering him powerless and jobless.

Harvey Weinstein, reportedly, reached a settlement with his victims worth $44 million.

$30 million of which would allocated for the plaintiffs against Weinstein, and then the rest would be for the Weinstein’s associates’ legal fees (mostly former associates) who are at the same time defendants in the lawsuits involved.

Majority of the settlement would be shouldered by the insurance companies of Harvey Weinstein.

It was reported in December 2019, that the actual settlement was at $25 million, to be paid for by an insurance company. This means that the 18 victims will share among them the amount, $6.2 million.

Each of them would get no more than $500,000. In an ongoing class-action lawsuit such as this, there would be potential future claimants so $18.5 million of the settlement amount will be set aside for this.

Harvey Weinstein ultimately lost the battle over first-degree criminal sexual act and third degree rape and was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Fashion Brand Marchesa Facing Backlash In Light Of Harvey Weinstein Scandal

Harvey’s ex-wife’s fashion company was greatly jeopardized because of Harvey got involved with the brand’s promotion.

Marchesa was planning to launch an new collection of engagement rings in partnership with Helzberg Diamonds, but the deal went off as soon as the sexual harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein were made public by The New York Times.

Georgina Chapman, together with Keren Craig, her co-founder, cancelled their company’s summer 2018 preview runway show in October.

Marchesa received a major backlash in social media where people were rallying to boycott the company. Also, employees of the fashion brand have quit due to their fear that Marchesa would never recover from the scandal.

The company’s main source of income is their bridal gowns collection. All of the collection’s clients, especially the brides, have turned against the brand, saying that they do not wish to be associated in any way with a sexual offender.

One of them is Lila Feinberg, whos is the ex-fiance of the programming head of Amazon who was also accused of sex crimes. Feinberg broke off her engagement with Roy Prince soon after the sexual harassment allegations were made public.

The company also faces the risk of losing its red carpet business whose clients include renowned actresses such as Cate Blanchett, Renee Zellweger, and Blake Lively.

Weinstein “strongly urged” those actresses involved in The Weinstein Company films don a Marchesa gown on the red carpet, which in turn has great ramifications against Chapman’s fashion brand.

Three months after the Marchesa designer company confirmed they were separated, Harvey Weinstein and his wife, Georgina Chapman, have reached a divorce settlement.

In the divorce settlement, Harvey will pay Georgina an estimated $15 to 20 million according to sources.

Does Harvey Weinstein Still Get Royalties?

No one has direct knowledge of the Weinstein’s global network of companies, but everyone agrees: he still makes money from at least some of his movies and probably from all of them due mainly of profit-participation deals.

Summary

Judging by his outstanding track record in the film industry, Harvey Weinstein, is undoubtedly considered one of the most powerful and significant film producers in history.

Miramax Films, his film production company, is a linchpin for the independent film industry, bringing a lot of interest to independent and underrated films.

But much to everyone’s surprise, all these have been permanently tainted by his horrendous crimes.

Harvey Weinstein net worth as of 2021 is estimated at $25 million, which is just a fraction of his former net worth of $300 million at the height of his career.
