One of the funniest individuals in Hollywood is Will Ferrell. He has been a major movie star for over two decades, reflecting his wealth.
The one thing that’s well-known about ultra high net worth individuals (UHNWs) – the folks worth at least $30 million USD – is that virtually ALL of them have some part of their fortune in real estate.
Many of the more famous rich people and “celebrity entrepreneurs” actually got their start in real estate. And that’s great for them! Not so much for us…
See, more millionaires are created during recessions than any other part of the economic cycle. Which is cool, except the last real recession was 2008, when real estate prices were in the tank and you could buy a whole neighborhood with $100,000.
Now, though, real estate prices are through the roof, and interest rates are skyrocketing too. So how does the everyday person start building a massive net worth in an economy like this one?
But for now, let’s dig in a little more about Will Ferrell…

He could charge $20 million or more for a single picture at his peak.
On July 16, 1967, John William Ferrell was born in Irvine, California.
Father Roy Lee Ferrell Jr. was a keyboardist for The Righteous Brothers, and mother Betty Kay Overman was a schoolteacher; they both worked in the music industry. When he was eight years old, his parents split.
In Irvine, California, Will attended Turtle Rock Elementary School, where he started schooling. After Rancho San Joaquin Middle School and University High School, he graduated. Ferrell played soccer in high school, mostly as a kicker.
Ferrell married Viveca Paulin, a Swedish actress he met in 1995 at an acting workshop in August 2000. They have three boys, Magnus Paulin Ferrell, Mattias Paulin Ferrell, and Axel Paulin Ferrell, and reside in New York City and Orange County, California.
Saturday Night Live
In the years 1994-1995, Saturday Night Live’s popularity and viewership started to wane. After seeing The Groundlings, an SNL producer invited Ferrell (along with future SNL actors Chris Kattan and Cheri Oteri, who were also members of The Groundlings) to audition for Lorne Michaels, the chief producer of SNL. For seven years, Will Ferrell was integral to the SNL ensemble.
Ferrell’s comedic impersonations propelled him to instant stardom on the show, and he was one of the most sought-after cast members. Additionally, he portrayed George W. Bush, Harry Caray of the Chicago Cubs, Robert Goulet, James Lipton, Janet Reno, and Alex Trebek. Among other things, The cartoons he created, such as Blue Oyster Cult member Gene Frenkle, cheerleader Craig Buchanan, and nightclubber Steve Butabi, were later made into a full film, “A Night at the Roxbury,” in 1998.
A member of the show’s exclusive “Five Timers” club, he has appeared as a guest presenter five times since he left in 2002. When SNL was surveyed in 2014, Ferrell came out on top.
Ferrell starred in several films, including Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Superstar, The Ladies Man (all based on SNL characters), Dick, Drowning Mona, and Zoolander during his Saturday Night Live career. Following his departure from Saturday Night Live, he made his feature film debut as Frank “The Tank” Richard in 2003’s Old School.
Critical accolades poured in for the part, which was a box office smash. MTV Movie Award nominations were made for Ferrell’s performance as Frank. The following year, he was cast in the lead role in Elf and went on to star in films like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Starsky & Hutch. During 2005, Ferrell made a total of $40 million.
A string of critically acclaimed and financially successful performances followed in 2016, including his highest-grossing opening with $47 million at the box office for Stranger Than Fiction and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, both of which showcased his dramatic acting skills. Step Brothers, which he co-starred in alongside John C. Reilly, was a box office hit in 2008. Overall, it made $128 million in revenue.
The era of Ferrell began to cool slightly in 2009 with the commercial and critical flop of Land of the Lost, which took in just $19 million in its opening weekend. He continued to produce films, largely sequels, to his earlier successes in the decade following. One of the most well-known faces in comedy is Ferrell, who has maintained his wacky and distinctive brand of humor.
In April 2007, Ferrell and his comedy partner Adam McKay launched Funny or Die, a streaming video website that features user-generated comedic films that visitors to the site then vote on. In January 2009, Ferrell made his Broadway debut with You’re Welcome America — A Final Night with George W. Bush, a one-person show based on his portrayal of President Bush. Curious George and Family Guy are just two of the many animated films for which he has provided the voice acting.
He has a stake in the soccer club Los Angeles FC.
Eastbound & Down (featuring Danny McBride, whom Will helped find) and Succession have all been co-produced by Will and McKay for HBO.
