What Is The Great Courses Plus?

The Great Courses Plus is under the umbrella of The Learning Company, a bigger corporation which was founded by the Former US Senate Committee Chief Counsel Thomas M. Rollins in 1990.

The Great Courses company’s aim is to make “lifelong learning and personal enrichment accessible to everyone, everywhere.”

They collaborate with leading organizations such as National Geographic, the Culinary Institutes of America, and the Smithsonian, to name a few.

Great Courses Plus provides video courses that are “researched thoroughly, examined extensively, and brilliantly crafted,” with the goal of being “complete, factual, and fascinating.”

After you have completed your account details, you can now begin looking for a course

You can do it by searching for a particular word, lesson, or even a professor. Alternatively, you can browse through the categories section.

The History of the United States is one of the topics you’ll find in The Great Courses Plus.

  • Philosophy & Religion
  • Professional & Personal Growth
  • Science
  • Travel

Every month, 3-4 new courses are introduced.

When a course piques your interest which, with such striking titles and eye-catching images, won’t take long, just click to view its homepage.

Information about the lecturer including their Alma Mater, most recent teaching location, and bio are available for your further reference as well as downloadable workbooks for your note taking.

You can also browse through each video to check what’s included and watch a trailer for the entire course.

These video lessons, as you may have guessed from the term “trailer,” are more akin to documentary series than university lectures.

The website brags that they have “no schedules, no homework, and no test—just learning for learning’s sake.”

As a result, the courses have no practice tests, exams, or assignments, just videos and the guidebook. You can replay and watch the videos as many times as you want, and you can even put subtitles and adjust the playback speed.

Since The Great Courses Plus is a subscription service, you must have a good Wi-Fi connection to watch videos seamlessly. The platform doesn’t allow you to download and binge-watch on a multi-hour flight.

The Great Courses Plus, on the other hand, has applications for a wide range of smart devices, including Apple TV, iOS, Android, Roku, and many others.

Who Is The Great Courses Plus For?

The Great Courses Plus is an excellent learning tool for those who want to probe deeper into a variety of topics.

This course is for you if you want a 12-hour talk on The Black Death.

It can be binge-watched in a sense because you can replay the lectures back-to-back. But you won’t be able to finish a lesson in just one afternoon. You will certainly get through a class in a week!

If you are a focused learner, this is an excellent resource for you who likes a more detailed discussion about various topics.

It’s very similar to podcast learning in a way. If you enjoy podcasts, you’ll definitely enjoy The Great Courses Plus.

Likewise, if you enjoyed college lectures, you’ll love this course because that’s just what these are: college lectures.

You will not get a diploma or a degree of course, but you will have a broader knowledge base.

Ease Of Use

The Great Courses Plus’ slogan greets you as soon as you reach the site: “Learn everything about anything.”

Further below, you’ll find an interactive menu-style interface that enables you to select a subject to learn.

When you scroll down, you’ll see the usual interface – advantages of using the platform, functionality, and a partner list.

Up to this point, the homepage is somewhat generic; but, I did enjoy the interactive menu, which is the first thing you see when you reach the site. It’s pretty straightforward to use.

When you click in the menu your preferred topic, the background picture shifts to a related course list that appears on the screen.

I chose “History,” and what piqued my interest in the list was “The Greek World: A Study of History and Culture.”

When you arrive at the landing page of the course, you can see a lecture list and some reviews at the bottom of the page.

I’m not a huge fan of this. The course page is probably the most unimpressive I’ve encountered so far.

It just isn’t inspiring people to take the course. Important information is missing and the the overall feel is just unappealing.

Aside from that, the website is “okay.”  The Great Courses Plus platform does not have any interface advancements, but that is still fine.

In terms of usability, I had no problems using the web – it is fairly straightforward right from the homepage.

I liked the site’s “Category” section. It’s another way to search preferred courses if you don’t like the front page’s interface.

Also, I loved how the page was laid out with each category having its own sliding menu that contains relevant courses to the chosen category

Overall, navigating the platform is pretty easy. The style options are also appropriate – there are a few aspects that may frustrate the average consumer, but it’s not a deal breaker.

Content Quality

People in general are happy about the courses offered by The Great Courses Plus.

Unlike several other MOOC providers, the platform employs instructors from various specialties to develop the courses.

This ensures that the bulk of the material on the web is created by genuine experts in their fields and is of college-level consistency.

People in general are happy about the courses offered by The Great Courses Plus.

MOOC features can set you apart from the crowd, especially that the market of online courses today are nearly oversaturated.

Some would opt for a slew of flashy, one-time features designed to entice potential customers every day of the week.

Others would take a more conservative view, attempting to work out how to a continuous flow of new students on a regular basis while retaining and satisfying the existing user base.

According to several reviews, the latter MOOC providers are more similar to this course.

In these The Great Courses review reviews, you’d find that the course does the following:

  • Focuses more on mobile support
  • Provides a consistent flow of new courses
  • Uses an outstanding subscription model
  • And a lot more.

Let’s have a quick rundown on the some of its main features:

First and foremost, there is mobile assistance. Many reviews state that the platform is firm about offering excellent mobile support via a native app that is accessible on every major mobile device, including Kindle.

It’s also important to note that some of these reviews mention issues with Kindle Fire devices and the software, but doesn’t appear to be a major issue.

Furthermore, the software needs a secure internet connection (WiFi) to function; offline browsing is not yet an option.

A free trial is another excellent service offered by the company. If you want to download the app and enrol, you will be able to take advantage of a 30-day free trial on their website.

MOOC providers, the platform employs instructors from various specialties to develop the courses.

This ensures that the bulk of the material on the web is created by genuine experts in their fields and is of college-level consistency.

Subscription Price

Pricing is always a critical consideration.

Users response is subjective when it comes to pricing options that a MOOC-based system may evoke depending on the method of choice.

But again, as most of its feedback emphasizes and warns, it is much preferable to purchase the company’s subscription package.

The monthly membership plan is $49.95, and the annual fee is $360.

Learning Experience

Since measuring the learning experience from the user’s perspective is impossible, let us stick to the platform itself.

The bulk of The Excellent Courses Plus reviews appear to have had positive encounters with the platform’s courses.

That said, it’s actually fair to assume that a large part of it has to do with the website’s mobile app and offering such a diverse range of courses.

Nevertheless, the primary explanation still lies on the consistency of the courses’ quality.

Of course, if you are confident that you are learning a subject matter from an expert, your overall learning experience becomes so much better and enjoyable

Is The Great Courses Plus Accredited?

The Great Courses Plus does recruit professors from Ivy League universities—some among the top 1% of in the country—but sadly, they are not accredited.

This video series aren’t intended to assess what you’ve learned or show you’ve achieved a certain degree of competency and there aren’t any assignments or quizzes, so you can’t earn college credit or even a diploma.

That doesn’t suggest the courses aren’t of excellent quality. Since Great Courses Plus employs only the best teachers, the instructors are experts in their fields.

When you try to study something without the pressure of exams and grades, learning can become easier and much more effective.

In fact, studies suggest that it is easier to learn when you are calm and not under pressure.

Is The Great Courses Plus Cheap?

The Great Courses are roughly the same price as other MOOCs.

While their pricing starts at $20 per month, $45 for a quarterly plan, and $150 for a yearly plan, that translates to $20, $15, and $12.50 per month, respectively. Most MOOC courses cost between $12 and $20.

The Great Courses Plus, on the other hand, provides less for the same price. There are no tasks to complete, no certification, and no tests to take at the end of classes to assess your understanding.

Numerous MOOCs also often allow you to check courses – free of charge. Although Great Courses Plus does offer a 14-day free trial, you must still subscribe to access any course.

And as opposed to other similar and comparable subscriptions, The Great Courses Plus falls short.

Documentaries in Netflix cost $15.99, streaming package of Smithsonian at $4.99 and their magazine at $12.

How Much Do Other Learning Sites Cost?

Online learning costs differ based on the type of content provided. Let’s take a look below:

Khan Academy, for example, is completely free and focuses on academic learning and test prep. You can donate since it is a free online platform and operated by a nonprofit organization.

MasterClass annual fee costs $180 and you get access to the full library. But if you want to access just one course, you need to pay $90 which isn’t really a good deal given what you pay for an annual subscription.

Skillshare is another video-based learning platform that focuses on helping innovative people advance their talents or expand their business. The cost of membership is $19 a month or $99 a year.

LinkedIn Learning is open to Premium members at varying costs. It starts at $29, which has other benefits including improved access to people and content on LinkedIn.

Is It Any Good?

This premium streaming service has been dubbed as the “Netflix for learning,” and the comparison is not too far off.

The Great Courses Plus course is a massive collection of high-quality material which provides you with almost every topic there is, from grade school math to classical music history to cooking to weaving.

While the subscription price is high, it is competitive to the fees charged by other streaming media services.

I think the only drawback would be the app’s clunkiness, particularly on mobile devices. You see, the navigation can be a little erratic, and it’s a shame you can’t find audio-only copies of the lessons for offline listening.

All in all, this is an excellent series of entertaining, masterfully produced talks on a wide variety of topics that could pique the interest of curious and creative minds of all ages.

The Great Courses Rev: Is The Great Courses Plus worth It? Is It A Scam?

And yes, The Great Courses Plus is all worth it if you ask me, and is an ideal alternative for you if you want to pick up a lot of wisdom from highly-respected professors.

It’s aimed at eager students who want to dive headfirst into a lengthy yet entertaining lecture sequence.

Scam Risk's #1 Recommended Way To Make Money Online In 2021

Are you looking for an online business that you can run where you won’t run into competition left and right?

What about something that can lead to passive income down the road…

Does that interest you at all?

Our Scam Risk team has done some digging into an online business model that has just recently popped up.

With the looming housing crisis that will make 2008 look like a toddler, many real estate investors and online entrepreneurs having begun building digital assets!

Digital Real Estate

Or local lead generation (as some people call it) is the process of building out websites and generating leads for small service-based businesses.

It’s actually pretty similar to dropshipping except for a couple of key differences:

  • You can make more money off of less traffic
  • Competition is practically non-existent at the local level
  • Much easier to rank!

Before you start calling it a scam…keep this in mind, we are Scam Risk…

We report scams. We don’t promote them. See a The Great Courses Plus link anywhere?

Now that that’s out of the way let’s dive deeper into that comparison.

With stock investments, you have to rank for national keywords, which is really hard to do because of how much competition there is.

You are having to compete with like 1 million other people to sell the same product…it’s crazy hard!

But now let’s flip the script…

How many people do you think are competing to cut down trees in Bossier City Louisiana?

Exactly…not much.

So now that we’ve established that competition for local lead generation is much less than for stock investing…let’s talk about the money. It’s always about the money, right?

The Money?

Most dropshipping products you would sell are likely $50-$100 and on top of that, you’re lucky if you’re making a 10-20% margin from Amazon because of it.

That means you’ll have to sell 1,000-2,000 products just to reach a decent income of 5k per month. You definitely have your work cut out for you on that end…

Now let’s take a look back at that tree service example again…

The average tree service job is worth anywhere from $500-$2,000 and most contractors are generous with their referral fees; they are known to pay out roughly 10-20% of the final price.

So now it’s time for some math…

Let’s say you build and rank one of these sites in a local area with very little competition and after 3 months, your site is at the top of page one locally.

And let’s say that worst cases scenario you only end of with just 10 calls.

On top of that, let’s say Covid hit the tree service guy and his family extra hard this year and he can only pay you 10%.

Going off the lowest numbers possible here…that means that just one of these sites could bring you in $500 a month. Now let’s say you build 10 of these things…you’re looking at 5k a month and you’re generating literally 1/10th of the traffic you would need to make that much with eCommerce!

Sound too good to be true…?

It isn’t.

Where To Learn

We know that you’re not going to be able to just go off on your own and start killing the digital real estate game from the little we talked about it…

And you might be thinking to yourself…”Dang I don’t even know where to begin…”.

So our team at Scam Risk has taken the time to go out and find a program that we could recommend and give our Scam Risk seal of approval to.

We don’t take it lightly either.

After months of searching far and wide, we finally found one!

This course offers hands-on training step by step going through exactly what you need to do to build and rank your new lead generation.

On top of that, they have live chat calls on zoom where you can all get together, hang out, and ask questions if you have any.

Even further, unlike most dropshipping opportunities you’ll see that we review, this program has a heavily monitored private Facebook group which means absolutely no spam!

This group is active 24/7 as well!

If this type of online business model sounds better to you than dropshipping… go ahead and watch those videos above!
