Sam Ovens Skool doesn’t offer much in terms of education which doesn’t make it beginner-friendly for those looking to build their first course. Besides videos recorded by Sam himself, there isn’t a lot of personalized or one-on-one mentorship. That said, what this platform lacks, it makes up for in community with a vibrant social media-like community dashboard, live messaging, and a mobile app.

I had fiddled around with some different online businesses in college:

Some random MLMs, a bit of affiliate marketing, a (failed) dropshipping store or two, all the usual suspects.

Even my dad had been involved in MLMs back in the day… selling knives & other random nonsense people (probably) didn’t need.

All I really wanted was to find something that was going to actually work for me.

Maybe those things had worked for others, but for me it all turned up a fat “0” in the bank account department.

So I searched! And searched… and searched… and searched…

And eventually, I somehow stumbled upon a program that promised to help me build an income online (read about it here if you’re curious).

I didn’t really want to be “rich”.

The thought of making a reliable $5K per month & not having to worry about clocking in to a 9-to-5 ever again was all I needed.

Sure, there were people in the program doing high-6 and low-7 figures per year… but that wasn’t what I was out for.

I just wanted to provide freedom for myself, and if I was lucky, take my family along for the ride.

Fast forward a few days and a few phone calls & I was enrolled!

Here’s the first “money making website” I put up:

I built that site in 2020, and it still makes me $1,500 per month. It’s a basic 5 page website I built based on a template the program provides.

The best part to me? My dad and I get to do it all together!

So between the:

  1. Ease of reaching $5-$10K per month in income online
  2. Straightforward-ness of the system to do it
  3. Fact that I get to do it w/ my family

Sure, it takes some work and dedication – but anyone that tells you that there’s a business out there that requires no work is selling you a lemon.

A theme park needs to have a series of elements and if it’s missing just one, you won’t enjoy your time as much. 

For example, the park needs to have exciting rides (content), games (interactive features), food and drinks (benchmarks), and a fun and supportive staff (community)

All of these elements need to come together in perfect harmony and while I believe that Skool has the potential to be that well-designed theme park for course creators, it’s not a one-size-fits-all-solution. 

While Skool provides a legitimate and valuable platform for many course creators, it doesn’t necessarily address all the challenges you might face in your journey to build a successful online course business.

Challenges such as:

  • Creating high-quality, compelling course content
  • Attracting and nurturing a targeted audience
  • Implementing effective marketing strategies
  • Providing personalized support and feedback
  • Continuously updating and improving your courses

Without developing expertise in these areas, you risk losing students’ interest and engagement, even with a powerful platform like Skool.

Not to mention the ongoing and never ending challenge of getting new students into the program.

You can have unlimited students in a group with unlimited courses so I find it hard to understand why you would need to create multiple groups unless you have totally different educational models. 

We also can’t forget about the dreaded transaction cost of 2.9% of all sales.

There’s also a 14-day free trial you can use to play around with the platform and see how it works. All-in-all, I like the simplicity of this pricing structure. No need to think too hard about it, sign up, or not. 

What Makes This Different?… or Not?

I’ve also taken a lot of courses and used most of the e-learning tools you’re likely familiar with. 

Skool, founded by Sam Ovens, shows immense promise in revolutionizing the online course creation space. However, it’s crucial to recognize that not everyone is ready to create a course even if they are one of the best in their chosen field. 

The allure of getting hundreds of people to follow you and hang on your every word is compelling but succeeding as an online course creator demands a wide range of skills beyond what any platform can provide – from crafting compelling content to marketing your offerings effectively.

For example, you might be the best darn birdhouse builder on the planet, but that doesn’t mean you can create a course and actually have success with it. 

It requires a ton of marketing knowledge, list building, funnel building, social media knowledge, email marketing, and more to get students. 

So, there’s a few things you’ll want to think about before committing to Skool. 

  1. Are you ready to pour your heart and soul into learning the marketing aspect of building a course?
  2. Are you capable of going months or even longer without an income while building your audience and authority?
  3. Have you considered other easier business models before deciding if a course is how you want to make money line?

While the platform itself may not let you down, you need to decide if now is the right time for you to start building and pushing a course.

Even the greatest courses fizzle out eventually.

I just don’t believe the never ending process of selling an education to people online is the best way to make money right now. I’m also concerned about the longevity of the educational product business model because there are a lot of scams out there and building a successful online course requires serious commitment, time, effort, and resources. There’s no promise of success.

Even more so, relying entirely on course sales as your main income leaves you vulnerable to some serious issues that would keep me up at night:

  • My course never gaining enough traction to make up the upfront costs.
  • Struggling to consistently attract new students.
  • Demand weaning over time for my course and ultimately feeling like a failure.
