How It Started

Plexus' International President Alfred Pettersen and CEO Tarl Robinson both got their start in the business as distributors.

In 1992, Pettersen joined his first direct selling company.

He quickly rose to become one of the company's top distributors in his native Canada.

Pettersen says,

"I thought I had a horse on which I could throw my retirement saddle on and ride into the sunset."

However, his company merged with another direct selling company in 2001.

His earnings dropped by half in the first month.

After 9/11, revenue plummeted even further.

Pettersen then decided that he wanted to run his own network marketing company in the future.

He says,

"I wanted to do network marketing in whatever way it could and should be done."

When he discovered an MLM business called Plexus Worldwide in Scottsdale, Arizona, he realized he found his chance.

Plexus only had one product, which was non-consumable.

They were selling a Breast Chek Kit, which was designed to assist women in self-screening for breast cancer.

Pettersen was promoting a breast cream that he thought would boost sales for Plexus, but after months of negotiations, Plexus turned him down.

The company's founder had discovered he was suffering from a life-threatening illness and planned to close it down.

Instead, he accepted Pettersen's offer to buy the company.

Pettersen, though, needed funding.

Tarl Robinson had been a successful distributor at various MLMs even while quite young.

He was now looking for opportunities to invest in the industry.

Robinson became Pettersen's partner after the two men became friends.

The Plexus Plan

In May 2008, the two men took over the company.

The first thing Pettersen and Robinson did was a switch from a binary compensation structure to what the company refers to as "The Plexus Plan."

“We both know what it's like to be on the distributor side, so we decided to treat our Ambassadors—as we call our distributors—as partners”

As a result, they set about developing a new compensation structure, which was primarily developed by Pettersen.

Profit-sharing is a key feature.

It is open to Ambassadors who pay the $34.95 annual membership fee.

To qualify, Ambassadors must set up a Backup Order, which is an automatic shipment of products chosen by the Ambassadors that is sent on the Ambassadors' preferred day every month, but only if they do not have enough personal volume to qualify.

Ambassadors can earn a cut of Plexus' profits if they do this.

Ambassadors can earn money in the MLM company's compensation plan in a variety of ways, and this revenue sharing is just one of them.

The Plexus Plan distributes revenue evenly across the field, rather than favoring top performers.

“Our compensation plan has eliminated internal competition,” says Pettersen.

“Any Ambassador who increases their average sales increases the company's profitability and everyone benefits.”

Another Partner

As the business grew, Pettersen and Robinson realized they needed someone on the executive side to bring them industry contacts.

As a result, the MLM company recruits Alec Clark as Chief Marketing Officer.

Clark had worked for an MLM business where both Pettersen and Robinson had previously worked as distributors.

Plexus grew so rapidly, in terms of gross income, that Clark relocated to Arizona and became their third partner.

The Bad

Truth in Advertising.org (TINA), reported that Plexus received a warning letter from the FTC on June 5, 2020, alleging that the company and its representative made false claims on social media stating that their products could prevent or treat COVID-19.

They gave specific examples and asked the company to look over the claims, stop making claims that weren't backed up by truth and evidence, and respond within 48 hours describing how they addressed the FTC's concerns.
