In 1994, Manning began his college career. The third-string quarterback was Manning’s position at the University of Tennessee in his rookie season. However, because to other players’ injuries, Manning was allowed to open the season as the starting quarterback. In his first three collegiate seasons, Manning would lead the Volunteers to three bowl victories.
Throughout his undergraduate career, Manning’s performance steadily increased and he received various awards for his efforts. Charles Woodson would win the Heisman Trophy in his last season at Tennessee, while Peyton Manning would finish in second place. Manning was generally predicted to be the first overall choice in the 1997 NFL Draft because of his performance at Tennessee and work ethic.
In 1998, the Indianapolis Colts selected Peyton Manning in the NFL draft and this is where started his professional football career. His time with the Indianapolis Colts was from 1988 through 2010. It only took him a week to learn the Colts’ playbook. After struggling somewhat in his rookie season, he helped the Colts in 1999 to win the franchise’s first division title since 1987 and into consistent playoff contenders. Manning led the Colts to eight division titles during his time with the team.
A neck injury sustained in the 2011 season placed Manning’s NFL career in jeopardy. Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was picked first overall in 2012 after Manning was benched for the season. Manning was released one month before the draft and re-signed with the Denver Broncos in 2012.
Manning was the Broncos’ quarterback from 2012 to 2015, and he was instrumental in the team’s division title. In 2016, following his third trip to the Super Bowl, he announced his retirement from the NFL after 18 seasons.
There was a dedication ceremony and unveiling of Manning’s bronze statue the following year, which was attended by several hundred admirers. The Indianapolis Colts “Ring of Honor” also included Peyton Manning, who was honored for his contributions to the team.
Additionally, during his time with the Denver Broncos, Manning continued to rack up achievements including several records and accolades. Overall, Manning has earned a record-breaking five league MVP award and is largely recognized as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
In 2004 and 2013, he was also named NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He currently holds the record for most passing touchdowns in a season, most passing touchdowns in a game, most passing yards in a season, and most game-winning drives.
