This is the sole child of Jennifer Anne (Montgomery) and Joseph A. Buttigieg; Pete was born in South Bend, Indiana on the 19th of January 1982. Anne Montgomery is the name his mother prefers to go by. He grew up in a middle class neighborhood.
His parents met and were married at New Mexico State University, where they worked as faculty members, reason why they have middle class lifestyle. To pursue his degree, his father immigrated from Malta to the United States.
At the University of Notre Dame, not far from South Bend, Buttigieg’s father began his academic career as an English professor. For 29 years, Buttigieg’s mother also taught at Notre Dame. Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks, a three-volume English translation and editing of Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks by his father, inspired him to study literature in college.
Graduated in St. Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana, as valedictorian of his class of 2000. Buttigieg won first prize in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum’s Profiles in Courage essay contest that year.
It was a joyous occasion for him to meet Caroline Kennedy and other members of the Kennedy family in Boston, where he accepted the medal. An award-winning essay by a high school student focused on then-Vt. Rep. Bernie Sanders, one of only two independents in Congress.
Also in 2000, Buttigieg was one of two student delegates selected from Indiana for a joint scholarship competition sponsored by the United States Senate and Hearst Foundations, an annual scholarship competition.
St. Joseph High School alum Buttigieg went on to study history and literature at Harvard University. He was elected president of the Harvard Institute of Politics’ Student Advisory Committee and contributed to the institute’s yearly assessment of young people’s political beliefs.
While studying for his undergraduate degree, he researched the impact of Puritanism on U.S. foreign policy as shown in Graham Greene’s novel The Quiet American and wrote his thesis on the subject. Phi Beta Kappa elected him an honorary member of their fraternity.
Buttigieg received a Rhodes Scholarship and will be attending Oxford University this fall as a Rhodes Scholar. For his work at Oxford, he had been an editor of the Oxford International Review, a group of around a dozen students who met for casual debate and discussion.
