DigitalOcean Overview

Digital Ocean Overview

What Is DigitalOcean?

Digital Ocean is a cloud-based service solution that offers multiple cloud computing services such as Virtual Machines, Databases Load Balancers, and Developer Tools.

DigitalOcean provides many services through a well-designed cloud computing service.

It is used mostly for web hosting applications and websites. It’s a popular choice because of its ease of use. Also, DigitalOcean’s data center offers high security for applications.

Its users can use virtual private servers (VPS), also known as Droplets. The platform lets users manage their apps via a web-based UI (Command Line Interface) or CLI (command line interface).

Because of its reliability, DigitalOcean is is a preferred choice for large corporate clients worldwide. It allows users to select parameters such as Droplet size, data centers for applications, and geographic region.

DigitalOcean History

Ben Uretsky, co-founder of DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean began as ServerStack in 2003, which was a managed web hosting company founded by the Uretskys brothers. The goal of the two was to create a product that combined web hosting and virtual servers.

They studied the cloud hosting industry and found a trend in which there were fewer options for software development companies. Digital Ocean was created in 2011 to deliver cloud hosting and server-provisioning services for developers.

Mitch Wainer, the co-founder of Digital Ocean, and Uretskys were introduced in 2012. Digital Ocean’s beta version was launched the same year. The team consisted of the Uretsky brothers, Jeff Carr, Alec Hartman, and Mitch Wainer.

The company also became part of TechStars’ startup accelerator.

They achieved a milestone of 400 clients and 10,000 cloud server instances launched by August 2012. The company obtained credit financing of US$130,000,000 in April 2016 to help build new cloud services.

Digital Ocean’s new virtual machines, Droplets, were unveiled in January 2018. In May 2018, the company announced its Kubernetes Container Service.

Mark Templeton was the former Citrix CEO and became Digital Ocean’s new CEO by replacing Ben Uretsky. In 2019, Templeton’s replacement was Yancey Spruill (former SendGrid CFO).

Digital Ocean Advantages

Digital Ocean Advantages

Below are some DigitalOcean advantages over other leading cloud platforms today.

Low Data Transfer Costs

Low Data Transfer Costs

DigitalOcean has extremely low data transfer prices. The bandwidth cost is just $0.01/GB. This is a great choice for high-traffic applications like audio & video streaming and cloud storage.

Another benefit is the bandwidth and the simplicity of price. Droplets come standard with an allocated amount of free outbound data transfer, and free inbound bandwidth.

  • The price is the same in all regions.
  • Prices are the same for all bandwidth volumes;
  • Each droplet is allocated a generous bandwidth allowance

The following table compares DigitalOcean bandwidth pricing with AWS, Azure, as well as GCP regular pricing.

Bandwith/ Remarks

  • Digital Ocean: $0.01/ Same price for all regions and volume
  • AWS: $0.09/ For the first 10TB in North Virginia. Price for other regions will vary.
  • GCP: $0.12/ For the first 1TB in Iowa
  • Azure: $0.0875/ From North America do any destination. Volume range from 5GB-10TB/Month.

Uptime Guarantee

DigitalOcean‘s next advantage is its reliability. It has an uptime promise of 99.99% on Virtual Machines and storage. It guarantees no more than one hour of downtime per year.

Digital Ocean’s SLA – Service Level Agreement – is the same as AWS. There are no significant differences in this variable. GCP and Azure use different methods to measure the SLA. They separate it between single instance and multiple instance availability.

Below is a table that summarizes their differences.

Uptime Guarantee/ Remarks

  • Digital Ocean: 99.99%
  • AWS: 99.99%/ Same service uptime commitment.
  • GCP: 99.50%/ Lower compute SLA for a single instance. In multiple zones, the SLA for instances is 99.99% or higher.
  • Azure: 99.50% / The SLA for a single instance is lower. The SLA for instances in multiple zones is 99.99% or higher.

Ease Of Use

Ease Of Use

DigitalOcean also has the advantage of being easy to use and transparent about its products.

  • UX and UI look great and are very clean
  • In less than one minute, you can deploy a Droplet.
  • The console is very intuitive and easy-to-use
  • Simple to use management panel, analytics, and metrics

You can also find tutorials on how to use DigitalOcean platform, making it easy for both seasoned and junior developers.

Predictable Pricing Structure

Predictable Pricing Structure

DigitalOcean pricing is easy to comprehend. The products will be bundled with a price that covers:

  • Memory
  • Number of vCPUs
  • Bandwidth
  • Disk Size

Billing works hourly, so there is no extra charge for long-term commitments. The hourly pro-rated price is the same as the monthly price. Take the example below to see how it works.

  • Entry level Virtual Machine: $5/month or $0.007
  • RAM: 1GB
  • vCPU: 1
  • Bandwidth: 1TB
  • SSD Disk: 25GB

The whole package will cost $5/ month. You will pay the same amount monthly if you use less than 1TB network or 25GB SSD. Additional bandwidth and storage can be contracted if you use more networks than 1TB or 25GB.

Developer Centric

DigitalOcean‘s core mission has always been to provide a fantastic developer experience. It knows what developers need and what obstacles they face. Here are some examples of developer-centric services:

  • APIs and Tools
  • Deploy button
  • CLI
  • Pre-Built Images
  • Amazing documentation

DigitalOcean also offers a community of developers who support one another via their community page. Finally, the documentation is well-structured, clear, current, and offers in-depth content.

Digital Ocean Disadvantages

Digital Ocean Disadvantages

Below are some DigitalOcean limitations compared to other cloud platforms.

Power Off Instances

DigitalOcean instances that are powered off will keep charging until they turn on again. This is because the instance is still taking up space on your server. To stop the charges, you will need to destroy them.

This is different on other clouds. AWS/ GCP/ Azure, for instance, will only charge you for the block space associated with the virtual machine when it is stopped. It will not charge you for the virtual machine itself.

It’s a disadvantage over other clouds, particularly for non-production environments. A company might have an AWS/Azure/GCP test environment that runs 8 hours per day during business days and shut down the instance at night and weekends.

DigitalOcean makes this impossible. To avoid paying the fees, you could either destroy the Droplet or continue to pay the expenses 24/7.

DigitalOcean's Droplet

Let’s take an easy-to-understand illustration to explain the concept. Let’s say you have a $5 per-month Droplet on Digital Ocean. You also have a t3.micro instance in AWS. The following specifications are available:

Type

  • Digital Ocean: Basic
  • AWS: t3.micro

Memory

  • Digital Ocean: 2GB
  • AWS: 1GB

vCPUs

  • Digital Ocean: 1
  • AWS: 1

Storage

  • Digital Ocean: 25 GB
  • AWS: 25 GB ($9.99/mo)

Price

  • Digital Ocean: $10/mo
  • AWS: $7.592/mo for the VM + $2.5/mo for Storage

Both AWS and DigitalOcean will be priced based on computing power and storage. AWS will not charge for computing power when the instance has been stopped.

Let’s look at this scenario. In a test server that runs 5×8 (22 Business Days) for one month, it will cost $10 via Digital Ocean, $4.33 on AWS ($1.83 to host the VM, and the same $2.5 to store).

Note that the simulation did not consider bandwidth costs. DigitalOcean is an excellent choice for network-intensive apps. Even if you consider the total 1TB of egress, Digital Ocean would still be less expensive than AWS.

Below are the details:

1TB Transfer

  • Digital Ocean: $10/mo
  • AWS: $96.49/mo

63 GB Transfer

  • Digital Ocean: $10/mo
  • AWS:$10/mo

1 GB Transfer

  • Digital Ocean: $10/mo
  • AWS: $5.23

So, the price comparison is not straightforward and depends on the following variables:

  • Hours per month the VM will not be used
  • Storage Size
  • Bandwidth

Digital Ocean is generally ideal for network-intensive apps, while AWS/GCP/Azure will be an excellent choice for testing environments with low egress that are not being used 24/7.

The following table compares the outcomes of stopping an instance from major cloud providers.

Is There a charge for The instance?

  • Digital Ocean: Yes
  • AWS: No
  • GCP: No
  • Azure: No

Is There A Charge For The Resources?

  • Digital Ocean: Yes
  • AWS: Yes
  • GCP: Yes
  • Azure: Yes

Limited Locations

Limited Locations

DigitalOcean is a cloud provider that offers relatively few deployment locations, compared to other providers. It includes eight regions that are spread across North America, Europe, and Asia. There are no data centers in South America, Oceania.

This table shows you how small DigitalOcean is compared to these major cloud providers.

Number of Regions/ Locations

  • Digital Ocean: 8/ New York, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Singapore, London, Frankfurt, Toronto, and Bangalore
  • AWS: 24/ Covers all continents
  • Azure: More than 50; Covers all continents
  • GCP: 24/ Covers all continents

DigitalOcean‘s limited geographical reach may have an impact on your business. Digital Ocean may be an option if your business is primarily located in Europe or the US. Companies located in Australia, New Zealand, and South America may experience a decrease in performance and latency due to the distance between their data centers.

No Free Tier

Digital Ocean does NOT offer a Free Tier. Digital Ocean’s lack of a free tier is considered a disadvantage, as other cloud providers offer a similar service.

Digital Ocean offers FREE Trial Credits for new customers. However, not all products/ services of AWS/ Azure/ GCP come with a free Tier either.

Limited Products

DigitalOcean‘s range of products and services is smaller than other cloud providers. They primarily offer the following:

  • Virtual Machines
  • Kubernetes
  • Databases
  • App Platform
  • Block Storage
  • Object Storage
  • Networking (VPC, Load Balancers, IPs, DNS, and Firewalls)
  • Developer Tools

AWS/ Azure/ GCP, on the other hand, offers a wider variety of products and services.

What Is My Top Recommendation For Making Money Online In 2022?

Digital Real Estate

Our review team has come across a program in the real estate industry that is next level!

Although it’s not real estate in the traditional sense, it’s all digital.

Yup, Digital Real Estate!

Where DigitalOcean falls short is in scalability.

You can’t realistically expect to be able to make passive income when you have to watch your store and manage ads all day.

But what if you leverage it?

With this digital real estate program, you can have the ability to completely walk away from the laptop because there is no ad management!

Sound too good to be true?

Of course it does!

But it isn’t… in fact, business owners wish they had this skill!

All you have to do is build and rank a website and forward the jobs off to a business owner in town, you could even email it to them!

This works for literally any service based business, tree service, plumbing, towing, etc.

How do you get paid and how much?

Simple, after you forward the jobs off to a business owner and he makes some money off of them, you simply ask to make the deal beneficial for each other.

make a deal

A fair price to charge per lead, depending on the industry is 10-20%…let’s just use the tree service industry for example and go by worst case scenario.

Let’s say you build and rank the site and only 10 jobs a month come in. The average tree service job is anywhere from $500-$2000!

That means at bare minimum you have an asset worth $500 a month!

See why they call it digital real estate now?

That’s a rent payment.

The great thing is how easy it is to scale. You don’t have to answer the phone…all you have to do is get the phone to ring.

Remember DigitalOcean and all the small profit margins?

This one actually allows you to collect that without being on the laptop managing a store all day. Truly passive income!

The training program takes making money online to a whole other level. The owner of the program walks you through how to build and rank a site hand in hand, with the occasional voice over when he is sharing his screen.

You will learn the importance of keywords, website name, how to send call notifications via email, backlinking, etc.

Once the training program is completed you will also have access to a Facebook group much better than the DigitalOcean group in our opinion. This group is much more active.

Kylie is crushing it

Unlike DigitalOcean, where you have to run ads all day and worry about getting a $5 profit off a $50 product 1,000 times over…. A business will always want more leads and another job. In fact it doesn’t even matter that the job isn’t coming from their website name…they see it as it is…expanding digital real estate.

Unlike DigitalOcean, more people have been able to walk away from their 9-5 job as well.

Digital real estate allows you to have total passive income with most of your day being spent OFF the laptop.

Now, I know you probably have tons of questions… So, check this out to learn more.
